BUSH PROVIDES ARTISTIC INSPIRATION news article by Shane Desiatnik Artist Peter H Marshall has won 64 awards and honours since 1990 for his delicate and moody paintings and drawings of the Australian bush and for stunning portraiture work, but only now is his work being exhibited in the Blue Mountains. His latest body of work, ‘Seeing the Forest for the Trees’, will be unveiled at Day Fine Art in Blackheath at 2pm on Saturday, December 14 where it will be on exhibition until January 6. Inspired by the enchanting forested environment of Western Victoria where he grew up, Marshall developed a lifelong fascination with capturing the grandeur of towering trees in the Australian bush. When he moved to the Blue Mountains several years ago he was again surrounded by his favourite subjects, which became the inspiration for his new work. Gallery co-owner Vince Day, an admirer of Marshall’s career, said the opportunity to present the now locally based artists’ work featuring the beautiful trees of Blackheath was too good an opportunity to miss. “this exhibition will mark Peter H. Marshall’s debut in the Blue Mountains,” Mr Day said. “Peter truthfully engages the viewer with his subjects, allowing for introspection and engagement.” It’s a fine scoop for the petite gallery space on the corner of Govetts Leap Road and Wentworth Street, Blackheath which creatively uses every inch of wall space – and even floor space – in true French Salon style. Apart from the current Exhibition, the gallery displays an interesting mixture of rare. mainly 19th century paintings and sketches depicting Blue Mountains and broader Australian scenes as well as works by Australian and International artists covering nearly all forms of impressionism. There is a clear interest in this gallery in artworks with historical significance, in particular Old Master drawings, prints and works on paper. Stock includes work by by artists including Norman Lindsay, Arthur Streeton, Hans Heysen, Thea Proctor, John Brack and Arthur Boyd. Gallery opening hours are 10am to 5pm from Friday to Monday and by appointment at other times.
